We examine the relationship between the logics of nonsense of Bochvar and Halldén and the containment logics in the neighborhood of William Parry’s A I. We detail two strategies for manufacturing containment logics from nonsense logics—taking either connexive and paraconsistent fragments of such systems—and show how systems determined by these techniques have appeared as Frederick Johnson’s R C and Carlos Oller’s A L. In particular, we prove that Johnson’s system is precisely the intersection of Bochvar’s B 3 and Graham Priest’s (...) non-symmetrized connexive logic and that Oller’s system lies just beneath the intersection of B 3 and Priest’s paraconsistent L P. We conclude by examining Oller’s system in more depth, giving it a characterization in terms of L P and showing that it plays the same role to Harry Deutsch’s paraconsistent containment logic S that Aleksandr Zinov'ev’s S 1 plays with respect to A I. The Oxford Handbook of Philosophical Theology attempts both to familiarize readers with the directions in which the scholarship of this discipline has gone and to pursue the discussion into hitherto under-examined areas. Philosophical theology is aimed primarily at theoretical understanding of the nature and attributes of God and of God's relationship to the world and its inhabitants. During the twentieth century, much of the philosophical community (both in the Anglo-American analytic tradition and in Continental circles) had grave doubts about our (...) ability to attain any such understanding. In recent years the analytic tradition in particular has moved beyond the biases that placed obstacles in the way of the pursuing questions located at the interface of philosophy and religion. Written by some of the leading scholars in the field, the articles in the book are grouped into five sections. In the first section, articles focus on the authority of scripture and tradition, on the nature and mechanisms of divine revelation, on the relation between religion and science, and on theology and mystery. The next section focuses on philosophical problems connected with the central divine attributes: aseity, omnipotence, omniscience, and the like. In the third section, articles explore theories of divine action and divine providence, questions about petitionary prayer, problems about divine authority and God's relationship to morality and moral standards, and various formulations of and responses to the problem of evil. The Age of Enlightenment continues the debate with traditional elements from Neo-Platonism and Hermetism, Pythagoreanism, magic, alchemy and Kabbalah which today are subsumed under the heading of early modern age esotericism. The reactions range from the critical or historicising to emphatic acceptance and integration. At the same time, however, the discourse of the age also gives rise to polemic confrontations with the newly emerging esoteric formations. This paper is about the semantic analysis of referentially opaque verbs like seek and owe that give rise to nonspecific readings. It is argued that Montague's categorization (based on earlier work by Quine) of opaque verbs as properties of quantifiers runs into two serious difficulties: the first problem is that it does not work with opaque verbs like resemble that resist any lexical decomposition of the seek ap try to find kind; the second one is that it wrongly predicts de (...) dicto (i.e. narrow scope) readings due to quantified noun phrases in the object positions of such verbs. It is shown that both difficulties can be overcome by an analysis of opaque verbs as operating on properties. This is a strongly modified version of a paper entitled lsquoDo We Bear Attitudes towards Quantifiers?rsquo that I have presented at conferences in Gosen (Gesellschaft für Sprachwissenschaft), Ithaca (SALT I), and Konstanz (Lexikon). Im Februar 1930 beschloß das Parlament der tschechoslowakischen Republik, Präsident Th. G. Masaryk aus Anerkennung seiner Verdienste um die Republiksgründung eine Summe von 20 Millionen Kronen zu widmen. Aus Dankbarkeit seinem philosophischen Lehrer Franz Brentano gegenüber ermöglichte Masaryk mit einem Teil dieser Summe im darauffolgenden Jahr die Gründung einer Brentano-Gesellschaft und eines Brentano-Archives in Prag unter der Leitung von Oskar Kraus. Der vorliegende Beitrag versucht die Vorgeschichte und die Geschichte der Gesellschaft bis zu ihrer endgültigen Auflösung im Jahre (...) 1955 und damit ein Stück vergessener Wissenschaftsgeschichte zu rekonstruieren. Recent developments in advanced industrial societies have increased the prominence of kinds of social inequality not adequately accomodated in traditional theories of class and social stratification. It is argued that the source of this failure is not, as has been claimed, the vertical imagery informing these theories, but rather their one-dimensionality, i.e., their assumption of a single unitary distributive mechanism as the essential generator of comprehensive social inequality. The weakness of a one-dimensional approach is illustrated through an analysis of Beck’s (...) criticism of a class-hierarchy model and his notion of ‘individualized’ inequality. The analytic superiority of a three-dimensional view of social stratification is advocated, and its systematic foundations in Weber’s statements on classes, estates, and political domination are explicated and elaborated. The shortcomings of Weber’s views on social status are diagnosed, some elements of a theory of status inequality compatible with Weber’s analytical schema are presented, and the multidimensionality of status inequality is underscored. Es mag seltsam anmuten, Dialog und Undarstellbares zusammenzubringen. Was haben Probleme der Darstellung, gängigerweise im Bereich der Erkenntnistheorie, der Semiologie oder der analytischen Sprachphilosophie angesiedelt, mit solchen des Dialogs, der ja genuin sozialphilosophisch lokalisiert wird, gemein? Man erkennt eine Gemeinsamkeit, wenn man betrachtet, wie das Undarstellbare selbst Theorien zum Dialog herausfordert. Wird der Dialogbegriff von Undarstellbarem her gedacht, so wird er nicht einfach aus der Sozialphilosophie in die theoretische Philosophie übertragen, sondern verweist auf einen eigenen Sinn von Dialogizität in der (...) Theorie. Der Band schlägt also eine Reaktualisierung des Dialogbegriffs vor, die bspw. in den Bereichen Diskursanalyse, Sprachphilosophie und Ästhetik spielt. Diese Reaktualisierung bezieht sich besonders auf die Auseinandersetzung zwischen 'deutscher' und 'französischer' Philosophie und wird in drei Schritten entfaltet. In einem ersten Teil wird beleuchtet, wie Dialoge jenseits einer sozialphilosophischen Explikation aussehen könnten. Dann werden Einbrüche des Undarstellbaren in Diskurse nachgezeichnet. Zuletzt wird die Verbindung beider Momente dadurch dargestellt, daß Theorien zu Wort kommen, die sich auf Undarstellbares hin dialogisch anlegen. (shrink)

The concept of situatedness turns away from ideals of objectivity “from nowhere” and denotes the marking of the place from which a discourse or a theoretical approach takes its starting point. Theories of different traditions have emphasised the need to reflect on their own situatedness in order to avoid mere doxa. Since “situation” is one of the basic concepts of existential phenomenologies (Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty), it can serve as a terminological foundation for a reflection of embodied standpoints. The space- and (...) perception-theoretical difference between situation and position – developed in phenomenology of perception and space orientation – can be further thought politically and expanded into “situational difference”. With the ambivalent intermediate position between the place of speaking and the space of the political, an analytical differentiation would be available that can lead to a phenomenological explication of the logic of the politics of positioning. Der Film ist eine ethische Erzählung. In diesem Sinne beteiligt er sich am gesellschaftlichen Diskurs über gutes oder schlechtes, richtiges oder falsches Handeln und thematisiert Moral und Unmoral innerhalb der Gesellschaft. Der Sammelband stellt eine Methode der ethischen Filmanalyse vor, die anhand ausgewählter Beispiele konkretisiert wird. Auf diese Weise analysieren namhafte Autorinnen und Autoren der philosophischen und theologischen Ethik Filme und arbeiten deren moralische Fragen heraus. Damit werden die Inhalte zentraler Bereichsethiken der Angewandten Ethik zur Sprache gebracht.

Naturalism is the current orthodoxy in analytic philosophy. Naturalism is the conjunction of the (ontological) claim that all that truly exists are the entities countenanced by the natural sciences and the (epistemological) claim that the only true knowledge is natural-scientific knowledge. Drawing on some recent work in Critical Theory, this article argues that naturalism qualifies as an ideology. This is the case because naturalism meets three key aspects shared by paradigmatic cases of ideology: (i) naturalism has practical consequences and implications (...) of a specific kind, (ii) those endorsing naturalism fall prey to a dual deception: having false meta-level beliefs about naturalism as being without alternative, and (iii) naturalism has a tendency towards self-immunisation. The article ends by suggesting we pull naturalism out of our collective cognitive backgrounds onto the main stage of critical discourse, making it a proper topic for philosophical critique again. In der Auseinandersetzung mit der Semantik Alteuropas hat Niklas Luhmann darauf verwiesen, dass der Begriff der menschlichen Lebensform in der antiken Semantik jenen Platz besetzt hält, an dem eigentlich ein Gesellschaftsbegriff zu entwickeln wäre (I). Der Beitrag geht der Frage nach, ob der zeitgenössische Begriff der menschlichen Lebensform, der eine tragende Bedeutung in der post-wittgensteinianischen Philosophie besitzt, dadurch erhellt werden kann, dass man ihn als funktionales Äquivalent des Gesellschaftsbegriffs versteht. Anhand von Wittgensteins Philosophischen Untersuchungen wird nachgezeichnet, dass der Begriff sich (...) in der Tat als ein begriffliches Angebot für die Frage nach der »Realität des Sozialen schlechthin« auffassen lässt (II, III). Die heutigen Verwendungen des Begriffs weisen dabei allerdings noch immer jene Gefahren auf, die Luhmanns Vorbehalte gegenüber der antiken Semantik begründeten: die Gefahr, die unerreichbare Einheit des Sozialen zu reifizieren und die in einem solchen Begriff zu entfaltenden Probleme vorschnell zu verdecken (IV). Diesen Gefahren steht zugleich ein spezifisches Problematisierungspotential gegenüber, das den Begriff der Lebensform gegenüber dem Gesellschaftsbegriff auszeichnet. Dieser Begriff erlaubt die besondere Akzentuierung eines zentralen Problems des Sozialen: des Problems der Einheit der Differenz von Individuum und Gesellschaft, das immer schon gelöst ist, wenn soziale Operationen geschehen, und das zugleich darin als unlösbares insistiert (V). Jedem drängt sich die massive, objektiv kaum zu bezweifelnde und sogar anschaulich gegebene Gewissheit ins Bewusstsein, einst geworden und daher nicht immer schon gewesen zu sein und einmal zu vergehen, das heißt nicht unbegrenzt weiterexistieren zu können. Dennoch gibt es in der gesamten Philosophie und Wissenschaftsgeschichte europäischer Prägung kaum eine andere dem Thema Werden und Vergehen in seiner ganzen Ausdehnung gewidmete Abhandlung, die diesen der Natur so tief eingewurzelten Sachverhalt einer philosophischen Analyse und wissenschaftlichen Beschreibung zugänglich macht. Das erste Buch (...) erörtert Gegebenheit und Begriff der unterschiedlichen Arten von Vorgängen ; das zweite Buch dagegen handelt von der Verursachung der Vorgangsart des Werdens und Vergehens und ihren Bedingungen. Aristoteles ist es gelungen, eine unter philosophischem Aspekt heute noch lehrreiche wissenschaftliche Erkundung, theoretische Beschreibung und ursächliche Erklärung des Werdens und Vergehens sowie seiner allgemeinen und speziellen Rahmenbedingungen vorzulegen, auch wenn in der konkreten Ausgestaltung das meiste davon auf völlig falschen Prämissen über die Natur des Universums beruht. Textgrundlage für die Übersetzung ist Harold H. Joachims zuerst 1922 erschienene Oxforder Standardausgabe des griechischen Textes. Die Textgestalt im einzelnen wurde durchgehend verglichen mit der rezenten Ausgabe des griechischen Textes von Marwan Rashed und war vor diesem Hintergrund an vielen Stellen neu zu beurteilen, was in nicht wenigen Punkten zu stets kenntlich gemachten Abweichungen von Joachims Vorlage geführt hat. Die Übersetzung folgt nach Möglichkeit zeilengetreu ihrer griechischen Vorlage und versucht, die karge bis abweisende Sprachdiät des Originals nicht durch reichhaltigeren und geschliffenen Ausdruck im Deutschen auszugleichen, sondern vielmehr auch in der Übersetzungssprache spürbar zu halten. Auf diese Weise wird die Durchsichtigkeit von Struktur und Duktus des Gedankens weitgehend so wie im Griechischen bewahrt. Der Grund für die Bemühung um eine möglichst genaue Abbildung des Originals in einer anderen Sprache liegt darin, dass die deutsche Werkausgabe ohne den griechischen Text auskommen muss und dennoch eine wissenschaftlich zureichende Grundlage für die Interpretation des aristotelischen Gedankens bieten soll. Wünschenswert ist außerdem, dass Leser, die nicht genügend des Griechischen mächtig sind, nicht nur zuverlässig über den Sinn des Originals orientiert, sondern instand gesetzt werden, auch an der weltweit ausgedehnten Forschungsdiskussion mit gewisser Urteilsfähigkeit teilzunehmen. Da in dieser Forschungsdiskussion über Aristoteles sehr oft die Berufung auf einzelne Begriffe oder bestimmte Wendungen eine wichtige Rolle spielt, sollte die Übersetzung nach Möglichkeit den tatsächlichen Wortbestand widerspiegeln, den der griechische Originaltext bietet. ‚Bodenlos’ lässt sich eine Sozialphilosophie nennen, die von einer Koexistenz von Sinnentwürfen ausgeht, wie sie Jean-Luc Nancy formuliert hat. Die aus dieser Gleichursprünglichkeit resultierenden Konflikte müssen durch Entscheidungen gelöst werden. Die Theorie des Politischen, wie sie in der französischen Gegenwartsphilosophie diskutiert wird, schließt an dieses Modell des Sozialen an. Doch deren dezisionistische Zuspitzung lässt sich nur dann mildern, wenn die darin implizierte Verkennung der Alterität aufgegeben und die Konflikte als Widerstreite singulärer Ansprüche interpretiert werden.

Current phenomenological approaches consider schizophrenia as a fundamental disturbance of the embodied self, or a disembodiment. This includes a weakening of the basic sense of self, a disruption of implicit bodily functioning, and a disconnection from the intercorporality with others. As a result of this disembodiment, the pre-reflective, practical immersion of the self in the shared world is lost. Instead, the relationship of self and world is in constant need of reconstruction by deliberate efforts, leading to the growing perplexity and (...) hyperreflexive ruminations that are found in schizophrenic patients. John Rawls' conception of a reasonable pluralism proceeds on the epistemological assumption that it is not possible to set up one specific notion of justice attached to certain beliefs about the nature ofthe person, the purpose and the goal of human life. The liberal position insists on the principle of moral justification, according to which no norm is legitimate unless it can be accepted in principle by all affected persons. According to this view, it is recommended, in public debates where (...) the legitimacy of laws and state actions is being disputed, citizens should confine themselves to the use of religious arguments for which independent, secular reasons can be given. This conception has elicited an array of critical responses from authors of a religious persuasion. Critics point above all to the unequal terms of entry to public debates. But it can be shown in termsofamodest foundationalist epistemology that the required translation of religious beliefs in secular reasons is not an unfair and unjustified charge. Personally justified basic beliefs can be tested in intersubjective and public procedures of reasoning without requiring believers to sacrifice their religious or confessional identity. (shrink)

In which sense can human beings be conceived as social animals? To elucidate this question, the present paper distinguishes the logical sociality of all living beings from the material sociality of social animals and the political sociality of self-conscious social animals. The self-conscious political sociality that characterises the human genus-being requires a complex interplay of first and second person through which alone we can participate in our form of life and determine its content. The human form of life thus constituted (...) is characterised by a particularly open, and at the same time precarious, membership which involves specific forms of vulnerability and power. Against this background, forms of objective spirit are necessary which grant us a generalized recognition and relieve us from the contingency of each particular second-personal recognition, without abandoning the openness of the sociality of the human form of life. This double requirement has led to paradoxical institutions in modern society which strive to protect and ensure the sociality of the human form of life precisely by naturalising and individualising our access to it. Wenn nach bleibenden philosophischen Beiträgen von Theodor W. Adorno gefragt wird, so werden meist drei mögliche Kandidaten erwogen: seine Analysen der spätkapitalistischen Kultur und Gesellschaft, seine Ästhetische Theorie und der von ihm entwickelte besondere Typ philosophischer Kritik, der unter dem Titel negative Dialektik bekannt ist. Seltener, wenn überhaupt, wird jemand die Ansicht vertreten, ein bleibender Beitrag Adornos bestehe in einer besonderen Moralphilosophie. Zwar trägt das am weitesten verbreitete Werk Adornos, die Minima Moralia, die Moral bereits im Titel. Jenes Buch (...) aber hebt schon in den ersten Zeilen mit der These an, dass die Lehre vom richtigen Leben heute nicht mehr der eigentliche Bereich der Philosophie sein könne, da das, was der Philosophie einmal »Leben hieß, [...] zur Sphäre des Privaten und dann bloß noch des Konsums geworden« sei. Statt einer Lehre vom guten Leben bleibt für die Philosophie nur eine Reflexion auf seine Beschädigung möglich. Wo immer Adorno sich der Moralphilosophie selbst zuwendet, markiert er in diesem Sinne vor allem ihre Antinomien und Aporien. Die Annahme liegt nahe, dass die Herausstellung solcher Widersprüche nur darauf zielen kann, uns vorzuführen, dass die Moralphilosophie ihren Gegenstand nicht – oder: nicht mehr – zu denken vermag und allenfalls expressive Funktionen hat für eine Gesellschaft, die von Antagonismen durchzogen ist. Eine positive Theorie der Moral scheint in diesem Sinne durch die Form unserer Gesellschaft und die ihr korrespondierenden Formen des Denkens verstellt. Gegen diese durchaus begründete Lesart möchte ich im Folgenden die These vertreten, dass Adornos Beiträge in diesem Feld noch eine weiterreichende Deutung erlauben. Die Aporien der Moralphilosophie verweisen nicht allein auf ihnen unterliegende gesellschaftliche Widersprüche, sondern zugleich auf innere Spannungen, die dem moralischen Handeln wesentlich sind: In der kritischen Reflexion auf die moderne Moralphilosophie und moralisches Handeln in der modernen Gesellschaft gewinnt Adorno eine dialektische Bestimmung dieses Handelns, dergemäß es sich dadurch auszeichnet, dass es Widersprüche des Handelns auf besondere Weise austrägt. Die ›Aporien der Moralphilosophie‹ verweisen für Adorno so auf eine ›Moral der Aporien‹ – sie verweisen auf innere Spannungen, die für das Moralische selbst konstitutiv sind. Moralisches Handeln ist dadurch charakterisiert, dass es die Spannungen von Besonderem und Allgemeinen, Freiheit und Gesetz, Natur und Geist, die menschliches Handeln wesentlich ausmachen, als Spannungen aushält und austrägt. Eine aporetische Moralphilosophie verweist so nicht zwingend auf die schlichte Unmöglichkeit ihres Gegenstands oder ihre eigene Unangemessenheit. Im Herausstellen innerer Widersprüche des Moralischen kann vielmehr im Gegenteil eine Erkenntnis des Moralischen liegen: eine Erkenntnis seiner dialektischen und gespannten Natur. (shrink)

Philosophen berufen sich in Gedankenexperimenten oft auf Intuitionen. Doch werden diese Intuitionen auch von anderen Philosophen oder von philosophischen Laien geteilt? Und durch welche Faktoren werden sie eigentlich bestimmt? Experimentelle Philosophen gehen solchen Fragen seit einigen Jahren mit empirischen Methoden auf den Grund. Ihre Ergebnisse sind mitunter verblüffend und haben für Aufsehen gesorgt. As a rule, mental illnesses are connected with increased self-observation, a narrowing of attention to one′s own person, and with the backward turn of thinking to what has already been done or has happened. These phenomena can be summed up in the concept of hyperreflexivity. In this paper, this concept is interpreted against the background of Plessner′s distinction between the lived and the objective body as implying always already a component of self-alienation. This will be illustrated in a number of (...) psychopathological conditions such as insomnia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, hypochondria and schizophrenia. (shrink)
